Modern phytochemical research has identified numerous volatile and nonvolatile constituents, with essential oils commonly containing high proportions of monoterpenes such as α-pinene, δ-3-carene, limonene, and related compounds. Cypress essential oil has demonstrated antibacterial activity in laboratory studies. Research on C. sempervirens essential oil has shown inhibitory activity against several bacterial species, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecalis (Selim et al., 2014; Ben Ghnaya et al., 2021).
More recent research has examined the mechanisms behind these effects. One study found that cypress essential oil exhibited bactericidal activity against Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and appeared to affect bacterial cell permeability and biofilm formation (2023).
These findings are promising for understanding the biological activity of the oil, but laboratory antimicrobial activity should not be interpreted as proof that topical or inhaled cypress oil can treat an infection.
Antioxidant Activity
Cypress essential oil has demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory assays, including DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging models. Research has identified substantial variation in antioxidant activity depending on the chemical composition of the oil and the cypress variety studied (Galovičová et al., 2023; Medini et al., 2025).
The antioxidant potential of cypress is of particular interest because oxidative stress contributes to numerous biological processes. However, laboratory antioxidant measurements do not establish equivalent effects in humans.
Anti-Inflammatory Potential
Research suggests that Cupressus sempervirens contains compounds with anti-inflammatory potential. Recent laboratory research has investigated the ability of cypress essential oil to influence inflammatory pathways, including 5-lipoxygenase activity (Assaggaf et al., 2026).
This provides an interesting scientific basis for the traditional reputation of cypress as a soothing botanical. However, most evidence remains preclinical, and clinical research specifically evaluating cypress essential oil for inflammatory conditions is limited.
Skin Health & Cosmetic Applications
Emerging research suggests that cypress essential oils may have applications in cosmetic skin care. A 2025 study examining three Tunisian varieties of C. sempervirens found antioxidant activity as well as inhibition of enzymes associated with collagen degradation and melanin production. The degree of activity varied substantially among the varieties, emphasizing the importance of botanical source and chemical composition (Medini et al., 2025).
These findings suggest potential cosmetic applications, but they do not establish cypress essential oil as a treatment for skin aging, hyperpigmentation, or other dermatological conditions.
Respiratory & Astringent Traditions
Cypress has a long history of traditional use for respiratory complaints and conditions involving excessive secretions. Reviews of Mediterranean cypress ethnomedicine document traditional applications involving coughs, flu, respiratory discomfort, and excessive sweating (Hussain et al., 2019).
These traditional applications are important historically, but clinical evidence specifically demonstrating that cypress essential oil treats respiratory disease remains insufficient.
Insect-Repellent Activity
Cypress essential oil has demonstrated insecticidal and repellent activity in laboratory research. Studies have reported activity against insects including Sitophilus granarius, suggesting that volatile compounds within the oil can interfere with insect behavior and survival (Ben Ghnaya et al., 2021).

Cypress essential oil has been investigated specifically for its potential relationship with stress. Korean studies examining inhalation of Cupressus sempervirens essential oil have reported reductions in measures associated with stress and relaxation among college students.
One study examined cypress inhalation in students experiencing employment-related stress and reported effects consistent with relaxation (Lee, 2018).
These findings provide some human evidence for cypress as a supportive aromatherapy practice, although the number of studies remains small and the evidence does not establish cypress as a treatment for anxiety or stress disorders.
Nervous System Calming
Cypress is traditionally classified within aromatherapy as a calming and balancing oil. Its fresh, woody aroma is commonly used in massage and inhalation practices intended to encourage relaxation and emotional steadiness.
A study of aromatherapy massage involving cypress among other essential oils investigated psychological and immunological outcomes, reflecting the broader interest in cypress as part of relaxation-oriented aromatherapy (Matsumoto et al., 2005).
Because these studies frequently use cypress in combination with other oils or therapeutic massage, it is difficult to determine how much of the observed effect is attributable specifically to cypress.
Mental Clarity & Composure
Cypress is often described in contemporary aromatherapy as an oil that supports mental composure rather than stimulation. Its clean, evergreen aroma may be particularly appealing when the mind feels crowded, emotionally reactive, or scattered.
The scientific literature does not yet provide sufficient evidence to claim that cypress directly improves attention, memory, or cognitive performance. Its potential benefit in this area is therefore best understood as an aromatherapy-based relaxation and grounding practice.

Contemporary Aromatherapy
Modern aromatherapy commonly uses cypress essential oil for grounding, emotional composure, relaxation, and support during periods of transition or grief.
There is some human research specifically involving cypress inhalation. A 2018 study investigated C. sempervirens essential oil inhalation among college students experiencing employment-related stress and reported findings consistent with relaxation and stress reduction (Lee, 2018).
A separate aromatherapy massage study incorporated cypress essential oil alongside lavender and sweet marjoram and evaluated psychological and immunological outcomes in healthy participants (Matsumoto et al., 2005). Because multiple oils and massage were involved, the study cannot establish an effect attributable to cypress alone.
Contemporary use therefore remains best characterized as complementary aromatherapy support, with promising but insufficient evidence for specific mental-health or medical claims.
